The Treasury Department confirmed Friday that it is considering a one-dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary next year, drawing criticism as millions of Americans face the effects of a government shutdown.

The draft design, overseen by U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach, places Trump’s profile on one side. The reverse side depicts him with a clenched fist before an American flag, with the words “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT.”

“Despite the radical left’s forced shutdown of our government, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever before,” a Treasury Department spokesperson said in a statement.

Congress in 2020 passed bipartisan legislation, signed by Trump during his first term, that allows the Treasury to issue $1 coins in 2026. The law requires that the coins be “emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial.”

Beach, who supervises the U.S. Mint, wrote on X that more updates will come “once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over.”

The announcement arrives as federal workers remain furloughed and essential services suspended due to the ongoing funding lapse. Critics argue that the timing of the proposed design highlights misplaced priorities in Washington, where disputes over spending have stalled government operations.
